The Deal with him: Sasuke was a regular adorable ninja student with big dreams of being an excellent ninja like his elder brother. But after Itachi killed their family and screwed up his mind to "live in an unsightly way", Sasuke became cool, and calls himself an 'avenger', whose purpose in life was to kill his brother. For some obscure reason, that made all the girls at the academy fall in love with him.
Sasuke first started to use his Sharingan when he fought against Haku with Naruto at Wave Country. His pretty eyes and body attracted the liking of Orochimaru, who wishes to take over his body after he became truly strong. To show his admiration, Orochimaru left a cursed seal after delightfully sinking his fangs into Sasuke's neck, which Kakashi sealed, but threatens to unleash everytime Sasuke gets excited in a fight.
After engaging in a precarious fight with Naruto, Sasuke felt inferior as he seemed not to be improving as much as Naruto. Orochimaru took the chance to send the Sound 4 ninjas to convince Sasuke to leave the Leaf village to seek more power from Orochimaru. Thus, Sasuke abandoned Konoha (Sakura's endless whining might have helped him decide to leave in a hurry) and is on his way to the Sound village.

The Deal with him: Top member of secret society Akatsuki, who even Orochimaru admits is stronger than himself, Itachi is shrouded with mystery. He killed his whole family with the reason that it was to measure his strength. He left his little brother alive after screwing up his mind. Although it seemed that Itachi spared his brother so he could become stronger and thus a worthy opponent someday, we believe that somewhere deep in his very disturbed heart, he loves Sasuke in his own very weird fashion.
From someone who killed his whole family, Itachi is surprisingly unconfrontational and unbloodthirsty unlike how one would expect him to be. There were many incidents when he could have easily killed an adversary but instead left them heavily wounded and avoided as many fights as he could. Itachi has issues and it would be delightful when we finally find out why.

Background: Team 7's teacher, and has a mysterious background regarding his Sharingan that everyone's dying to find out.
The Deal with him: Kakashi's the 1st ninja in the series that we see wearing a mask. His past is shrouded in mystery. His left eye is an implanted Sharingan eye which he used to copy over thousands of techniques, and earned him the nickname of Copy Ninja Kakashi. Infact, his only original move is the Chidori (Chirping of a Thousand Birds) or later also known as Raikiri (Lightning Edge) for cutting through lightning.
Team 7 is the 1st group of Genins that Kakashi passed as it seemed that they have comprehended the importance of teamwork. Yet now, it seems that the teamwork is falling apart because of Sasuke's wussi-ness.
Though cool and very attractive, Kakashi is a somewhat biased teacher as we see that he places more energy in teaching Sasuke. He's not as serious when teaching Naruto and seems to give up on Sakura. He might be making the same mistake as Sandaime Hokage for 'investing' in the wrong ninja.
Kakashi is seldom on time for an appointment because he always spends too much time staring at his dead best friend's grave (how he died is another mystery).

The Deal with her: Quoting Shikamaru, Sakura is "a female ninja with no special talent". Her job is to hang around battle scenes getting in the way, yelling "Sasuke-kun!" and pissing viewers off. The pink haired nin is also schizophrenic with Inner Sakura being the only interesting thing about her (hell yea!)
Sakura loves Sasuke (who hates her) and hates Naruto (who loves her). She had the longest crush on Sasuke since she was little and fell out with best friend Ino because she liked Sasuke too (sheesh they both need to get a life).
When Sakura was little, she was quiet and shy and often teased about her big forehead. Ino became her friend and taught her to be more confident. As they grew older, Sakura felt she was living in Ino's shadow and grew competitive with her, especially after knowing Ino liked Sasuke too. The first time we see Sakura actually fight was in the Chuunin exams when the Sound ninjas tried to kill Sasuke. In the final exams preliminaries, Sakura tied with Ino.

Ambition: To surpass all previous Hokages and have the village acknowledge him.
Background: 13 years ago, a great nine-tailed demon fox aka Kyuubi attacked the Village of the Leaf. In order to save the village, the 4th hokage sealed the demon fox in a newborn baby's body and sacrificed himself to suffer endlessly in Death's stomach. The baby was Naruto.
The Deal with him: Even though Naruto was only the vessel to trap the Kyuubi, the village saw him as the demon itself and everybody hated and ostracised him. Thus Naruto grew up lonely, friendless and determined to make his mark one day as the greatest hokage so everybody would acknowledge him.
The first few who acknowledged Naruto were the 3rd hokage, Iruka and Konohamaru (who was totally awed by Naruto's ingenious sexy no jutsu). Who Naruto really wished would acknowledge him then was Sakura, his crush. But Sakura was totally infatuated with Sasuke because he was oh-so-cool and that was one of the reasons Naruto became fierce rivals with Sasuke.
Besides being a ninja, one of his jobs is also to reach out to people like him who had a troubled childhood (eg. Haku, Inari and Gaara).
Naruto harassed the perverted Jiraiya into training him for the final Chuunin exams and the 2 grew rather fond of each other (father-and-son way not the perverted way!!).
Naruto also technically saved Konoha by saving Tsunade from Kabuto, and touched Tsunade enough to be convinced that she should be the 5th hokage.
Besides mastering a high level jounin technique (the kage bunshin), the summoning technique and rasengan, Naruto also has a secret technique which never failed to 'defeat' his enemy before. That's the sexy no jutsu and the higher level harem no jutsu.

* Personality: At first, Shura may seem like a bloodthirsty pirate whose only intentions are to pillage ships and destroy lives. On the contrary, this beautiful pirate is really a caring person who wishes for nothing more than for she and her crew to lead peaceful lives. However, this seems like an impossible dream due to their circumstances.
* Background: Shura, as well as the rest of her crew, grew up on an island located just off the coast of Japan. The people here were extremely poor. Because their plight was ignored by the government, the people were forced to turn to piracy in order to get the basic supplies necessary for survival. Shura's father was the first leader of the Kairyuu pirates.
Shura would come to inherit this position from her father.
Kenshin Gumi was the name given to this group by Yahiko. This is not an organisation, syndicate or any group with political motives in the anime series. Instead, it is just a name used to describe Kenshin and his friends.
As informal as the group is, its members somehow end up having great adventures and battles. They even become involved in matters of national security for Japan. This is best seen in the anime series when the Juppan Gatana, led by Shisio, were attempting to destabilise the Meiji government. Kenshin and his friends ended up battling to save the entire country.
By far the best fighter of the group is Kenshin. He was after all the famous 'Battousai the Slasher'. Despite this, the two greatest assets of this group is that they have a strong sense of justice and they care alot for one another. This is best seen in how they interact with one another. For example, Kaoru tends to see Yahiko as her little brother(this may explain why they fight alot with one another).
Finally, Kenshin Gumi comprise the main characters of the series with Kenshin being the main focus of attention.
The existence of this group or organisation dates back well into the Tokugawa era. Its original function was not only to protect Edo castle from harm but also to act as an intelligence gathering organisation. During the rebellion, members of this group were considered enemies of Kenshin since they worked for the shogunate. However, its role in the rebellion was limited because before Edo castle could be attacked, the shogunate had surrendered.
Following this, during the Meiji era, many of the members of the Oniwabanshu decided to live peaceful and quiet lives. In the anime, a few who decided to do this were Okina, Shiro, Okon, Omasu and Kuro. Then, there were those who could not live such a life. They only knew the "way of the sword". These members, in the anime, were Aoshi, Hannya, Shikijo, Beshimi and Hyottoko.Despite this difference in its members, all of them had two things in common. One was that they were totally loyal and dedicated to their leader and that they all cared for Misao.
In the end, this group will come to play a critical role in the anime with the main focus of attention being on Aoshi who is by far the best and most complex character of the group.
The Shinsen-gumi are much more than a creation coming from Samurai X. This was a real group which existed a long time ago in Japan. Its origins date back to a place in the district of Tama where the technique of kenjutsu was taught. Here, people being taught this sword technique were to become the first members of the Shinsen-gumi.
This group was loyal to the Shogun and were assigned to protect the Shogunate at all costs and patrol the streets of Kyoto to keep law and order. In doing this, members of this group would punish anyone severely who broke the laws of the city. Members of this group lived by the code of 'Kanji Makoto'(meaning loyalty). Members of this group were eventually nicknamed 'Wolves of Mibu' since they were usually stationed at the village of Mibu.
This group served the Shogunate to the very last when they were destroyed at the Battle of Boshin.
In the anime, two members of the group are the focus of attention. They are Saitou and Okita. They were the arch rivals of Kenshin. This rivalry was to continue well into the Meiji era when Saitou and Kenshin were to have their showdown once again.
The Jinpu Tai consists of a group of assassins who believe that it is their sworn duty to eliminate corrupt politicians so that Japan would have only good leaders. However, despite such high ideals, the group is really nothing more than a political weapon used by Senator Hashizume in order to eliminate his political opponents. Toma, the current leader of the group, is unaware of this scheme by Hashizume.
It is a common misconception that the Juppon Gatana is really the name of Shishio's underground organisation. This is not the case however. Instead, the Juppon Gatana is really one of the many resources which Shishio possesses. To be more precise, this group consists of Shishio's most elite fighters and personnel.
The members of this group consist of some of the best and most ruthless fighters in Japan. For example, Shishio possesses skills and fighting techniques which are equal to that of Kenshin while Soujirou is Shishio's best assassin. In addition to this, each member of the Juppon Gatana has his or her own reason for joining. For example, Usui joined because he wanted to kill Shishio as revenge for taking away his eyesight.
In the end, the main of objective of the group is to cause enough destruction and chaos in Japan which would help destabilise the Meiji government and allow Shishio to take over as the leader of Japan.
The Shinko Ryu gang is nothing more than a reflection of Raijuuta's thoughts and desires. He created this gang with the intention of using it to help him achieve his dreams of reviving the Shinko Ryu technique and creating his own personal empire. These desires and ideologies of Raijuuta have become the "driving force" behind the existence of this group.
This group consists of some of the most skilled and ruthless fighters in Japan and under the leadership of Raijuuta, they work very hard to try to make the dreams and ideologies a reality. However, there is one huge obstacle standing in their way. His name is Kenshin.
